Mr. Million Mafuta is the Director of Electricity at Malawi’s Ministry of Energy, where he oversees power generation, independent power producers, off-grid electrification, and transmission and distribution. He leads national efforts to expand access to reliable and affordable electricity, implement sector reforms, and catalyse private-sector investment. He has played a central role in shaping Malawi’s Energy Compact under Mission 300 and advancing major initiatives in renewable energy, hydropower, and rural electrification.
He holds a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering and has over 16 years of academic and applied research experience in renewable energy and sustainable power systems. His research is evidenced by peer-reviewed publications on off-grid energy monitoring and data-driven electrification planning, including studies on PV system rollout in rural Malawi and the value of data in off-grid energy systems. This strong research foundation strengthens his technical, analytical, and mentorship capabilities in driving sustainable growth in Malawi’s power sector.
